Maharashtra Plans App to Track and Book Ambulances with Upfront Fares

The Maharashtra Transport Department is developing a unified digital platform that will enable citizens across the state to find and book the nearest available ambulance through a dedicated mobile application or website, operating similarly to a cab-hailing service.

The proposed platform will display the vehicle's live location, estimated time of arrival, and service charges, providing patients and their relatives with clear pricing and tracking information before booking. To build the database, the system will use the records of ambulances registered across various Regional Transport Offices (RTOs).

The initiative is being organized jointly with the state Health Department, with plans to bring hospitals and private ambulance operators onto the shared platform. Under the proposal, private operators may be required to register their ambulances on the system, while the administration intends to prescribe minimum medical equipment and facilities for all listed vehicles.

Officials highlighted that the system is being designed specifically around the "golden hour"—the vital first hour following a road accident when swift medical intervention significantly increases a victim's chances of survival. Ambulance availability and rapid response times are considered decisive factors in accident survival rates.

Currently, citizens in emergency situations generally depend on telephone helplines or must contact individual private operators directly to secure transport. The proposed digital service aims to eliminate the need for making multiple calls by consolidating fragmented emergency transport services onto a single interface where available vehicles can be immediately identified.

The department is also evaluating standards for vehicles equipped to administer basic medical care during transit. In addition, provisions to include trained doctors and nurses on board during transport are being examined as part of the service parameters.

While the project is currently in its planning stage and does not yet have a formal launch date, officials stated that comprehensive operational modalities will be established before deployment. These next steps include outlining the registration process, service standards, pricing structures, and hospital coordination protocols.
