Maharashtra Plans Solar-Powered Passenger Boats for Versova, Madh and Alibaug Routes

MUMBAI — Maharashtra Fisheries and Ports Minister Nitesh Rane has directed officials to promote the deployment of modern, solar-powered passenger boats to make the state's water transport system safer, more comfortable, and environmentally sustainable.

Rane issued the directions during a review meeting held at Mantralaya on Sunday, where Navalt Boats delivered a presentation showcasing modern passenger vessels powered by solar energy and advanced technologies. The minister emphasised the need to reduce reliance on conventional fuels and shift toward clean-energy alternatives across Maharashtra's water transit routes.

Key routes across Mumbai and surrounding coastal areas were discussed during the meeting. Officials reviewed plans to deploy a 49-passenger speedboat for the Versova-Madh Ro-Ro service and a 20-passenger vessel for the Gateway of India–Alibaug-Mandwa route. Discussions also covered the potential introduction of modern boats to facilitate water transport between Mumbai and Sindhudurg.

Following the presentation, Rane instructed the Maharashtra Maritime Board and the Ports Department to draft a comprehensive proposal to expand passenger ferry services using modern vessels, while also identifying avenues to boost state revenue.

Rane called for the effective utilisation of Maharashtra's existing waterways and highlighted the importance of integrating clean energy, modern solar technology, and upgraded safety features into the broader maritime network.

Maharashtra Maritime Board Chief Executive Officer P. Pradeep and other senior department officials were present at the meeting.
