Maharashtra Proposes Joint Biomanufacturing Task Force With Australia

Maharashtra and Australia will expand cooperation in biotechnology, research, trade, and investment, with the state government proposing a dedicated task force to advance joint ventures and economic growth, Marketing and Protocol Minister Jaykumar Rawal announced on Wednesday.

Speaking at a bilateral meeting at the Sahyadri Guest House with a delegation of Australian biomanufacturing companies, Rawal directed state officials to prepare a formal proposal to establish the 'Maharashtra-Australia Biomanufacturing Task Force'. The planned body will identify areas for collaboration, streamline regulatory coordination, and accelerate investments across both jurisdictions.

Discussions during the meeting centred on investment opportunities, technology transfers, and research partnerships within Maharashtra's biomanufacturing sector. Rawal stated that the state, under the leadership of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, is pursuing sustainable growth through bio-based innovations in agriculture, textiles, food processing, and energy.

The minister pointed out that Australia offers advanced scientific capabilities, research expertise, and capital, while Maharashtra provides extensive infrastructure, manufacturing capabilities, a skilled workforce, and a large consumer market. Combining these resources is intended to build commercial value chains and broaden bilateral economic engagement.

Key areas identified for potential collaboration include alternative proteins, biological dyes derived from precision fermentation, algae-based commercial products, and the generation of hydrogen from agricultural waste. Rawal invited Australian firms to launch pilot initiatives in Maharashtra, transition toward commercial production, and scale their local operations. The partnership also aims to grant Maharashtra-based researchers and companies greater access to Australian markets and technologies.

The proposed task force will oversee the selection of joint initiatives, help coordinate regulatory requirements, and assist two-way investment flows. Officials at the meeting highlighted the importance of deepening institutional ties between regulatory and research bodies in both regions, specifically in the food and biotechnology sectors.

Attendees at the meeting included Australian Deputy Consul-General in Mumbai Christian Jack, Industries Development Commissioner Kadambari Balkawade, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India Regional Director Preeti Choudhary, and Chief Protocol Officer Rajesh Gawande. Corporate and regulatory representatives included Eden Brew Chief Executive Officer Rob Brown, Nuvera Bio CEO Lucy Semenec, Hygiene Renewables CEO Louis Brown, Michelle Wooster from Australia's Office of the Gene Technology Regulator, and Gayatri Subramanian from Food Standards Australia.
