Maharashtra Signs MoU With John Cockerill for Green Steel Hub in Gadchiroli
Maharashtra is set to take a major step towards sustainable industrialisation, with Gadchiroli being developed as a potential global hub for green steel production, Marketing and Protocol Minister Jaykumar Rawal announced on Thursday. The initiative follows a memorandum of understanding signed between the state government and John Cockerill India Ltd.
Speaking at a meeting organized in connection with the agreement, Rawal stated that the partnership represents far more than an industrial investment agreement. He described it as the foundation of an ambitious plan to transform Gadchiroli into an international centre for green steel manufacturing, giving a new direction to Maharashtra's overall industrial trajectory.
Rawal emphasized that the initiative will introduce advanced green technologies, large-scale capital investment, fresh employment opportunities, and dedicated skill development to the region. The project is designed to go beyond setting up a single industrial unit, serving instead as the cornerstone for the district's comprehensive economic and industrial transformation.
According to the minister, Maharashtra has emerged as a leading destination for global investment, advanced technology, innovation, and sustainable industrial development under the leadership of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. He noted that the state's strategic development roadmap focuses not only on economic expansion but also on balanced and inclusive regional development.
The initiative is expected to combine Vidarbha's rich natural and mineral resources with modern, environment-friendly production processes, establishing a benchmark model for responsible industrial development. Rawal explained that the state's vision is to establish Gadchiroli's identity not merely as a resource-rich district, but as a global centre for green steel, innovation, and sustainable industries.
Highlighting Maharashtra's push to expand international ties, Rawal noted that the state has been actively building international industrial partnerships through its Protocol, Foreign Direct Investment, and Overseas Indian Affairs initiatives. The collaboration with John Cockerill is projected to significantly bolster Maharashtra's standing in green steel production and international exports.
The formal exchange of the MoU between Maharashtra and John Cockerill India Ltd is scheduled to take place on September 4 in the presence of the Prime Minister of Belgium, bringing greater international visibility and recognition to the partnership.
To ensure the long-term success of the venture, the state government plans to provide necessary regulatory approvals, policy incentives, and an industry-friendly ecosystem, while placing special emphasis on developing technical skills among local youth across the district.
