Maharashtra Stops Funding RTO VIP Numbers for Official Vehicles

The Maharashtra government announced on Tuesday that it will no longer bear the cost if officials opt for special vehicle registration numbers, clarifying that the extra expense does not qualify for state funding.

The decision was outlined in an official circular issued by the state finance department in Mumbai. The department noted that several government offices were spending substantial amounts of money to acquire specific vehicle registration numbers, commonly known as RTO special numbers.

According to the directive, the move is part of the state government's broader push to curb unnecessary public expenditure and maintain strict financial discipline across administrative bodies.

The new rule applies universally across the state. It covers all state government departments and their subordinate machinery, as well as rural and urban local bodies. It also applies to universities, educational institutions, statutory and autonomous bodies, and state public sector undertakings.
