Maharashtra to Display Names of 106 Martyrs at Former Air India Building in Mumbai

The Maharashtra government will prominently and permanently display the names of the 106 martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the movement for the creation of Maharashtra at the former Air India administrative building in Mumbai, following a directive from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

Fadnavis instructed the state Chief Secretary to take necessary action on the proposal to feature the names on the facade of the building, which was recently taken over by the state government.

The directive came after Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar submitted a formal request to the Chief Minister seeking a place of honour for the martyrs within the new administrative facility. In his letter, Shelar noted that 106 protesters laid down their lives during the historic movement that led to the formation of Maharashtra, emphasising that their sacrifice remains an integral part of the state's history.

The former Air India building is currently undergoing renovation and is scheduled to house state government administrative operations. Because the facility is set to become an important centre of state administration, Shelar proposed that the names of the martyrs be displayed near the main entrance in an attractive and respectful manner.

Shelar stated that the sacrifice of those who made the creation of Maharashtra possible will continue to inspire future generations, adding that displaying their names on the facade of the administrative building will serve as a true tribute on behalf of the government.

The Cultural Affairs Minister also confirmed that the Directorate of Cultural Affairs will extend all necessary assistance to the concerned department to execute the project.

Following the Chief Minister's instructions to the Chief Secretary, the administrative process is now underway to ensure the 106 martyrs of the Samyukta Maharashtra movement receive a permanent place of honour at the landmark Mumbai site.
