Maharashtra to fine vehicle owners without HSRP up to Rs 1,000 from July 1

The state government of Maharashtra has announced that the deadline for installing High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) on older vehicles will officially end on Tuesday, June 30, 2026. Following the expiration of this deadline, the state transport department is scheduled to launch a major enforcement crackdown on non-compliant vehicles starting Wednesday, July 1, 2026.
The regulation applies to all vehicle owners in Maharashtra, including those in Mumbai, whose vehicles were registered before April 1, 2019. Motorists who fail to secure and install the mandatory high-security plates by the Tuesday deadline face strict action and financial penalties of up to Rs 1,000 under the Motor Vehicles Act.
Previously, the state government had extended the HSRP installation deadline to June 30, 2026. This extension was granted after officials reviewed the overall pace of the implementation process across the state and took into account the various inconveniences faced by vehicle owners trying to transition to the new plates.
With the final day of the extension arriving on Tuesday, transport authorities are prepared to begin on-road enforcement. From Wednesday, July 1, transport department personnel will actively target vehicles that are still operating without the mandatory plates.
The Motor Vehicles Act provides the legal framework for the upcoming crackdown, enabling transport officials to levy the Rs 1,000 fine on violators. Vehicle owners who have not yet complied have only one day remaining to complete the installation and avoid the penalty.
The transition to HSRP remains mandatory for all older vehicles registered before the April 1, 2019 cutoff date. Motorists across the state are advised to complete the installation immediately to ensure compliance before the transport department's enforcement teams begin active checks on Wednesday, July 1.
