Maharashtra to Fund Lifetime Care for Retired Police Dogs Under Handlers

MUMBAI — The Maharashtra government has announced a new welfare policy for retired police dogs, ensuring that canines completing their service will no longer be given up for adoption to third parties, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced on Saturday.

Under the new policy, retired police dogs will remain with the police department and stay under the care of their long-time handlers for the rest of their lives. The arrangement is designed to provide continuity of care and prevent disruption for the animals after their active duty concludes.

Chief Minister Fadnavis highlighted that dogs that have served the police force for a decade should be allowed to retire with dignity and comfort alongside the personnel they worked with.

To support the initiative, the Maharashtra Home Department will bear all post-retirement expenses for the canines. This includes full financial coverage for their food, healthcare, medical treatment, and daily living needs throughout their retirement years.
