Maharashtra To Penalise Schools Not Teaching Compulsory Marathi From Classes 1 To 10

On Monday, Maharashtra Education Minister Dada Bhuse announced in Mumbai that teaching the Marathi language is compulsory for Classes 1 to 10 in all schools across the state. While announcing the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly's Monsoon Session in Mumbai, Bhuse warned that the state government is prepared to take strict action against any educational institutions found violating this directive.
The issue was brought to the floor of the legislative assembly during a question raised by BJP MLA Atul Bhatkhalkar. Bhatkhalkar flagged concerns that several schools in the state were allegedly failing to implement the mandatory teaching of the Marathi language.
During the subsequent legislative discussion on the matter, multiple legislators pointed out that the current penalties imposed on erring schools were inadequate. They also argued that the enforcement of existing rules regarding the language mandate remained largely ineffective.
In response to the concerns raised by the lawmakers during the assembly session, Education Minister Bhuse declared that the state government has already issued official instructions to ensure Marathi is taught compulsorily in all affiliated schools. He emphasized that the government is fully committed to the preservation, promotion, and propagation of the Marathi language.
According to reports from news agency ANI, Bhuse also stated that the state government is fully committed to promoting the Marathi language and honoring the legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
To address the gaps in enforcement, Bhuse announced that the state government will launch a special inspection campaign. This campaign will be conducted across the entire state of Maharashtra to review the compulsory teaching of Marathi in all schools.
The minister warned that if any violations are detected during this state-wide inspection campaign, strict action will be taken against both the concerned non-compliant schools and the officials involved.
