Maharashtra to upgrade Mumbai train safety after Mayank Lohar stabbing

On Monday, June 29, 2026, the Maharashtra government announced a series of security measures to enhance passenger safety across Mumbai's suburban railway network. The announcement, made in the Maharashtra Assembly, follows the fatal stabbing of a commuter inside a moving local train on the Churchgate-Nalasopara line.

Minister of State for Home Yogesh Kadam informed the assembly that the state government is taking active steps to secure the transit system. The decision comes after the killing of Mayank Lohar, who was fatally stabbed on June 23, 2026, inside a first-class coach of a Churchgate-Nalasopara local train.

To prevent future violent incidents and protect daily commuters, the government will focus on three main areas of improvement: expanding CCTV coverage, increasing police patrolling, and upgrading emergency medical facilities at railway stations.

Under the new plan, the expansion of the CCTV network will allow security personnel to better monitor platforms and train coaches. The government aims to eliminate blind spots across the suburban railway network to ensure constant surveillance.

In addition to electronic surveillance, there will be an increase in active police patrolling. More police officers will be deployed to patrol local trains and railway stations, providing a stronger physical security presence to deter potential criminals.

The state government also plans to improve emergency medical facilities at railway stations. This measure is intended to ensure that passengers who suffer injuries or medical emergencies during their commute can receive immediate medical assistance.

According to Kadam, these measures are being implemented to address the safety concerns of the millions of passengers who use the suburban railway network daily. The fatal attack on Mayank Lohar in the first-class coach had raised urgent questions about passenger security, prompting the government's legislative announcement.
