Major Accident Averted in Mumbra as Ganesh Idol Trolley Skids
A major accident was narrowly averted in Mumbra, Thane district, in the early hours of August 29 after a trolley transporting a large Ganesh idol slipped on the road during an aagman procession.
The incident took place at around 1 am while the idol, belonging to the Bhiwandicha Shree Ganesh Mandal, was being moved on a transport trolley. The vehicle had travelled barely 500 metres away from the idol-making workshop when one of its wheels suddenly skidded.
Alert mandal members noticed that the trolley was about to lose balance and acted swiftly to bring it to an immediate halt, preventing the idol from crashing onto the street.
Following the near-collapse, mandal representatives contacted the Mumbra Police Station to seek emergency assistance. Police personnel reached the spot and coordinated the arrival of heavy machinery, including a JCB and a hydraulic trolley, to stabilise the structure.
Rescue workers and mandal volunteers spent nearly three hours carrying out the delicate operation. The Ganesh idol was safely lifted and secured using the hydraulic trolley and the JCB. Once the idol was secured, the damaged trolley was replaced with another vehicle, after which the procession resumed its journey.
No casualties or injuries were reported during the entire incident. Officials stated that it remains unclear whether the wheel slipped due to a pothole on the road, the excessive weight of the idol, or another underlying issue. The incident has drawn attention to the necessity of strict safety protocols and precautions when moving large idols during Ganeshotsav festivities.
