Makarand Narwekar Urges BMC to Install Protection Nets on Coconut Trees in Colaba

BJP Corporator Makarand Narwekar has demanded that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation implement safety measures to protect pedestrians and motorists from falling coconuts in Colaba. In a formal letter addressed to BMC chief Ashwini Bhide, Narwekar requested the civic body to install fall protection nets on coconut trees located along public roads, in municipal parks, and across high-traffic zones.

Narwekar pointed out that the Colaba neighbourhood has a substantial number of old coconut trees from which coconuts frequently fall without warning. He noted that these sudden falls create serious safety risks for people walking below and often cause significant damage to vehicles parked along the streets.

To highlight the feasibility of the solution, the corporator cited the proactive steps taken by residents of Cusrow Baug in Colaba. Residents of the complex installed coconut fall protection nets across trees within their premises, successfully eliminating the hazard of heavy coconuts crashing onto parked cars and pedestrian pathways.

Drawing from the model at Cusrow Baug, Narwekar called on the BMC to conduct a comprehensive survey of coconut trees in public places where similar safety nets can be deployed. He stated that good quality nylon protective nets should be installed on trees identified as hazardous, particularly those situated near roadways, parks, and busy pedestrian corridors.

According to Narwekar, installing protective nylon nets is a relatively simple and cost-effective preventive measure that will help avoid accidents, safeguard pedestrians, and protect citizens' property from unnecessary damage.
