Man dies in Kashimira after parked car airbag unexpectedly deploys

A 25-year-old man died on Wednesday afternoon in the Kashimira area of Mira Road, near Mumbai, after a parked car's steering wheel airbag unexpectedly deployed and struck him in the neck. The victim, Mohit Soni, was sitting inside a stationary Honda car when the safety mechanism triggered without warning, causing fatal injuries.
Soni, who was a resident of the Tiara Hills building in Kashimira, was inside the vehicle bearing registration number MH01AL6301, which was parked along the road at the time of the freak accident.
According to sources, the steering wheel airbag suddenly triggered, causing the plastic cover protecting the safety mechanism to fly off with immense force. The casing struck Soni on the right side of his neck, causing deep injuries and profuse bleeding inside the stationary vehicle. The steering wheel airbag casing allegedly hit the victim with high intensity, leading to fatal haemorrhaging.
Following the incident, Soni was rushed to the Pandit Bhimsen Joshi Government Hospital in Bhayandar. Doctors at the medical facility examined him and declared him dead before admission.
The Kashimira police have registered an accidental death report to initiate a formal probe into the suspected technical failure of the vehicle's airbag system.
Primary inspections of the Honda car by police officials from all sides revealed no visible evidence of an external collision or accident that could have triggered the deployment. Police sources stated that the vehicle is 15 years old but reportedly possessed a valid fitness certificate at the time of the incident.
