Man Dies, Two Firefighters Injured in Bandra West Building Fire

A 64-year-old man died and two firefighters were hospitalised after a fire broke out on the seventh floor of the Atlantic Building on Sherly Rajan Road in Bandra West, Mumbai, late on Wednesday night. The blaze, which was brought under control close to midnight, triggered panic in the suburban neighborhood as flames spread rapidly across the top floor of the residential structure.

The deceased has been identified as Azim Barodawala, 64. Civic authorities confirmed that Barodawala was rushed to Bhabha Hospital but was declared brought dead upon arrival.

Two firefighters from the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) sustained injuries during the rescue operations. Shivshankar Bharat Puri, 32, who is attached to the Bandra Fire Station, and Navnath Mohan Bite, 34, both suffered from suffocation while battling the smoke. Both men were subsequently admitted to Bhabha Hospital for treatment.

According to the MFB, the emergency was first reported at 9:12 pm. Due to the intensity of the flames, the call was upgraded to a Level-I fire at 9:55 pm. A joint response operation was launched, involving fire brigade personnel, local police, 108 ambulance services, Adani Electricity staff, and local ward officials.

The fire was concentrated in Rooms 701 and 702 on the seventh floor of the ground-plus-seven-storey building. It spread across electrical wiring, electrical installations, and various household articles.

During the height of the incident, reports emerged that several residents were stranded on the top floor. This prompted firefighters to launch immediate search and rescue efforts inside the smoke-filled premises.

Local residents reported that the flames were highly visible from several nearby high-rise buildings in Bandra West. Multiple fire engines were deployed to the scene to prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent structures. The fire was successfully extinguished at 11:50 pm.

The exact cause of the fire remains unknown at this stage.
