Mayor Orders Mumbai Port Authority To Fix Cotton Green And Reay Road Drainage

On Friday, July 3, 2026, Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde conducted a direct inspection of several heavily waterlogged areas around the Cotton Green Railway Station, Reay Road, and the Sewri Fire Station. Following the site visit, the Mayor issued urgent directives to the Mumbai Port Authority (MbPA) to immediately improve water drainage systems and ensure the safety of open manholes in these locations.

The inspection was carried out on Friday as heavy rainfall lashed the city of Mumbai, causing widespread waterlogging. During her visit to the affected sites, Mayor Tawde found that multiple low-lying areas, which fall under the jurisdiction of the MbPA, remained flooded.

The Mayor observed that there were no adequate arrangements in place to drain the accumulated rainwater from these low-lying areas. The lack of proper drainage infrastructure led to persistent waterlogging on the streets, creating difficult conditions for local residents and commuters.

In addition to the flooding, a major safety lapse was flagged by the Mayor during her visit near the Cotton Green Railway Station. The inspection revealed that open manholes in the waterlogged areas posed a significant hazard to public safety.

To address these critical issues, Mayor Tawde directed the MbPA to take immediate action. The port authority has been ordered to improve its water drainage systems and to secure all open manholes to prevent any potential accidents in the waterlogged zones.

The directives aim to address the safety lapses and ensure that the low-lying areas under the MbPA's jurisdiction, particularly around Cotton Green, Reay Road, and the Sewri Fire Station, are properly managed during heavy monsoon rains. The immediate focus remains on securing the open manholes and establishing adequate drainage measures to clear the accumulated rainwater.
