MGL Gas Pipeline Ruptures During Metro Work Near Majiwada in Thane

A major gas leak occurred early Friday morning near Majiwada Metro Station, close to Viviana Mall in Hardas Nagar, Thane (West), after an underground natural gas pipeline was punctured during road excavation work for an ongoing metro project.

The incident took place at approximately 5:42 AM on the service road. According to local authorities, heavy machinery involved in the metro construction accidentally struck and ruptured the 125 mm Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) underground pipeline, causing natural gas to escape rapidly into the surrounding neighborhood.

Emergency response teams quickly mobilised to secure the location. Personnel from the Vartak Nagar Police Station responded alongside the Thane Municipal Corporation's Disaster Management Cell, which dispatched a pickup vehicle, and the Thane Fire Brigade, which arrived with a fire engine and a rescue tender.

MGL technicians moved to isolate the damaged pipeline section and shut off the main gas supply line, preventing safety hazards from escalating. Local authorities confirmed that no casualties, injuries, or fire incidents occurred during the incident.

"The situation was swiftly brought under control, and emergency repair operations are currently underway," an MGL official stated.

Due to the ongoing repair work, piped natural gas (PNG) supply has been temporarily suspended to approximately 25 to 30 residential and commercial buildings in the immediate vicinity. Officials confirmed that emergency crews are actively working to repair the pipeline and restore normal gas distribution as quickly as possible.
