Mira Road man remanded after confessing to fatal stabbing on Andheri local train

A man accused of stabbing a fellow passenger on a fast local train between Andheri and Borivali stations has confessed to the crime, leading a Borivali magistrate court to remand him to police custody until June 29. The incident began late Tuesday night, June 24, as the Churchgate-Nallasopara fast local train pulled into Andheri station, where an argument over a wet compartment escalated into violence.
The victim, Mayank Lohar, suffered critical stab wounds to his chest and abdomen during the altercation and later died at Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivali.
The accused, Sachin Ramesh Suvarna, a resident of Mira Road, confessed to the stabbing on Thursday (June 25, 2026) during interrogation in police custody.
According to Suvarna's confession, the dispute began at 10:42 p.m. when Lohar asked him to close the train door because rainwater was entering the compartment. The interaction quickly turned hostile. Suvarna claimed that Lohar punched him, and other passengers in the coach subsequently sided with Lohar and assaulted him.
Suvarna stated that he was under the influence of alcohol at the time. Reacting to the humiliation of the assault, he pulled a sharp knife from his bag and stabbed Lohar in the chest and abdomen.
After the stabbing, Suvarna jumped out of the train at Borivali station before it came to a complete halt. The Western Railway administration stated that the train arrived at Borivali station at 11:04 p.m.
Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel reached the coach within three minutes of its arrival to assist the collapsed victim. They mobilized medical staff, a stretcher, and porters to carry Lohar to the station's emergency medical room by 11:22 p.m.
Following medical advice, railway authorities coordinated an ambulance to transfer Lohar to Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivali at 11:42 p.m., where doctors declared him dead.
Suvarna had been produced before the Borivali magistrate court on June 24. The police sought his custody to recover the weapon used in the crime and to conduct a deeper investigation. The court granted police remand until June 29.
The Western Railway administration has secured CCTV footage and other evidence from the scene and handed them over to the investigating agencies. Senior railway officials visited Borivali station around 1 a.m. to review the incident. Police are currently investigating whether Suvarna has a prior criminal record, in addition to examining eyewitness accounts.
