Mirzapur Film Spinoff Hits Theatres With Predicted Rs 25 Crore Opening

Gangster drama Mirzapur: The Movie, the theatrical spinoff of the popular web series, has arrived in cinemas across India, marking the first time an Indian streaming franchise has transitioned into a big-screen feature film. The big-budget project, which held its music launch in Mumbai last week, features Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, and Divyenndu reprising their roles, with Jitendra Kumar stepping into the ensemble cast.
Directed by Gurmeet Singh and written by Puneet Krishna, the film was produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar under their banner Excel Entertainment. While early reports suggested the film would conclude the saga that spanned three seasons on Amazon Prime Video, the makers clarified that the narrative serves as an origin story depicting the feud between the Tripathi and Pandit families. At the trailer launch, lead actor Ali Fazal advised fans to watch the first nine episodes of the show's first season, after which the film's story begins.
The feature brings back several familiar characters while introducing new talent. Jitendra Kumar takes over the role of Bablu Pandit, originally played by Vikrant Massey. The supporting cast includes Ravi Kishan, Abhishek Banerjee, Rasika Dugal, Mohitt Maalik, Sheeba Chadha, Rajesh Tailang, Pramod Pathak, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Harshita Shekhar Gaur, Shweta Tripathi, and Sonal S Chauhan. Ahead of the release, Pilgaonkar publicly alerted viewers to stay through the end credits for an additional scene.
The film received an 'A' certification from the Central Board of Film Certification with minimal modifications. Addressing reports that 35 seconds of footage had been removed, a source noted that the film was certified with hardly any modifications, allowing the theatrical release to preserve its original tone. Mirzapur: The Movie was shot in Hindi and has also been scheduled for release in Telugu.
The release generated strong commercial momentum before opening day, grossing over ₹7 crore in advance bookings and selling more than two lakh tickets within four days. Trade analysts projected an opening net collection of around ₹25 crore in India, which would rank among the largest non-star-led openings recorded in the industry. Ticket prices across tier-two and tier-three centres remained standard, while premium multiplex tickets reached ₹1,800 at venues such as DLF Mall of India in Noida.
The complete soundtrack was released under the Excel Music label in collaboration with Universal Music India's 'Hear it first' initiative. The release model provides initial access to premium subscribers across streaming services before wider rollout to ad-supported listeners, making it the first Bollywood soundtrack issued under the programme.
