MLA Rais Shaikh Raises Severe South Mumbai Power Crisis In State Assembly

MLA Rais Shaikh has raised a severe power crisis affecting South Mumbai in the state assembly, highlighting prolonged electricity outages of 8 to 12 hours in Mohammad Ali Road, Nagpada, Agripada, and Madanpura. The lawmaker drew urgent attention to the recurring power cuts, which have caused immense disruption to daily life and immense hardship for local residents.
Addressing the House, Shaikh pointed to systemic failures in infrastructure and staffing as the root causes of the ongoing utility crisis. He emphasized that the local power distribution system is currently overstretched and ill-equipped to manage the growing electricity demand of the region.
According to Shaikh, a key factor behind the severe staffing shortage is that no fresh recruitment of technical staff has taken place since 2011. This long-standing freeze on hiring has left the existing technical workforce struggling to maintain the heavily loaded network.
In addition to staffing shortages, the physical infrastructure in South Mumbai is severely outdated. Shaikh noted that much of the underground cabling in these neighbourhoods is decades old. This aging infrastructure has resulted in frequent technical breakdowns and escalating maintenance challenges for the operators.
The prolonged outages have caused immense hardship to vulnerable residents, particularly senior citizens, patients, and families who rely heavily on uninterrupted power for their essential daily needs. Shaikh stressed to the assembly that the outages are not merely an inconvenience but have become a serious public concern that demands immediate government intervention.
Calling for accountability and swift action, the MLA urged the state government to hold a detailed discussion in the Assembly. He specifically asked the concerned minister to present a concrete, time-bound plan to address the recurring power failures and upgrade the infrastructure.
