MMC Mandates Permanent Registration for PG Medical Students Within Three Months

The Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) has directed all medical colleges across Maharashtra to ensure that postgraduate medical students obtain permanent MMC registration within three months of admission. The order ends the practice of candidates waiting until the completion of their courses or the arrival of final examinations to seek registration.

In a circular dated August 27, the MMC stated that all candidates admitted to postgraduate medical programmes in government, corporation, private, and deemed medical colleges must secure registration in accordance with the Maharashtra Medical Council Act and its accompanying rules.

The regulatory body noted that several postgraduate students were applying for registration only at the very end of their academic programmes or immediately prior to appearing for their final examinations. According to the council, this delay caused avoidable administrative difficulties and procedural backlogs.

Under the new guidelines, college deans have been instructed to personally verify and monitor the registration status of every postgraduate candidate to guarantee that the process is finished within the three-month window following admission. Medical institutions have also been instructed to circulate the mandate among their postgraduate sections, academic departments, and faculty members to ensure strict compliance.

The Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) welcomed the clarification issued by the council. In a statement released on Sunday, Central MARD noted that the circular provides much-needed clarity to postgraduate residents regarding the formal timeline for obtaining permanent registration.

The association also urged all resident doctors across the state to complete the registration formalities within the stipulated timeframe to avoid procedural obstacles upon concluding their postgraduate medical studies.
