MMPA Hikes Wholesale Milk Price in Mumbai by Rs 9 to Rs 102 Per Litre

Wholesale milk prices in Mumbai will rise by Rs 9 per litre starting September 1, following a decision by the Mumbai Milk Producers Association (MMPA) during its general body meeting at the Diwan Centre auditorium in Jogeshwari. The revision will increase the wholesale rate from the existing Rs 93 to Rs 102 per litre.

MMPA president Chandra Kumar Singh stated that the revised rate will remain in effect from September 1, 2026, until February 28, 2027. The decision was passed unanimously during the meeting, which was chaired by Singh and coordinated by MMPA secretary Kasam Kashmir.

The association attributed the price revision to surging input costs, which have placed milk producers under financial strain. According to the MMPA, the purchase prices of milch animals have increased substantially, while the costs of cattle feed items such as dana, tur chuni, and chana chuni have escalated by up to 25 percent. The prices of grass, pinda, and other fodder varieties have also climbed.

Singh explained that the previous wholesale milk price increase was implemented in February 2026. Since that revision, dairy producers had been absorbing the continuous rise in input and operational costs. He noted that the new price adjustment became necessary to offset the increasing cost of milk production ahead of the festival season.

The association noted that the revision applies directly to the wholesale rate and does not automatically translate into an identical jump in retail rates for end consumers. Final retail price adjustments will depend on individual milk suppliers, local retailers, and commercial brands.

Currently, packaged cow milk sold by major dairy brands in Mumbai costs approximately Rs 57 to Rs 60 per litre, while loose or locally supplied cow milk sells for roughly Rs 65 to Rs 70 per litre. The city consumes an estimated 40 to 45 lakh litres of milk per day.
