MMRDA invites bids for Metro Line 5 expansion to Kalyan and Ulhasnagar

On July 11, 2026, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) invited bids for the civil works of Phase II and Phase III of Metro Line 5, which will extend the transit corridor from Kapurbawdi in Thane to Ulhasnagar. This expansion follows the official approval for the extension of the line. The project aims to significantly improve public transit options and connectivity between Thane, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, and Ulhasnagar.

The bidding process marks the start of appointing a contractor to construct the metro line from Dhamankar Naka in Bhiwandi to Ulhasnagar. According to the tender conditions, the successful bidder will be required to complete the civil works, which include the metro viaduct and station construction, within a 48-month deadline.

Once all phases are completed, Metro Line 5 will span a total of 34.21 kilometres and feature 19 stations. The massive infrastructure project has been divided into three distinct phases to facilitate development.

Phase I of the project, which connects Kapurbawdi in Thane to Dhamankar Naka in Bhiwandi, is already nearing completion. More than 97 per cent of the civil works for this initial phase have been finished. Currently, workers are installing overhead electrical poles and related systems along the route. The MMRDA is targeting the commencement of trial runs on this Phase I section by the end of 2026, and the corridor is nearing inspection by the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS).

Phase II will cover the corridor between Dhamankar Naka in Bhiwandi and Durgadi Chowk in Kalyan. This phase is split into two packages. The first package covers the stretch from Dhamankar Naka to Ranjnoli Junction, featuring an elevated corridor alongside a 3-kilometre underground section, one underground station, and one elevated station. The second package spans from Ranjnoli Junction to Durgadi Chowk, including a bridge across the creek and four elevated stations.

Phase III will extend the line from Durgadi Chowk through Kalyan to Bhoiwada and finally to Ulhasnagar. This final 11.83-kilometre corridor will feature four elevated metro stations, completing the link to Ulhasnagar.
