Monsoon rain disrupts Thane Trans-Harbour trains after track cave-in

Heavy monsoon rains disrupted suburban rail services on the Trans-Harbour line connecting Thane and Navi Mumbai on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, leaving thousands of morning commuters stranded. The disruption occurred during peak morning hours after soil and ballast beneath the tracks caved in between Turbhe and Koparkhairane stations following heavy rainfall.
Local train services on the line remained suspended for over an hour and a half, between 5:50 am and 7:35 am. Upon detecting the track failure, Central Railway authorities immediately initiated safety measures, including crowd management and emergency repair work.
Engineering teams were rushed to the affected stretch to stabilise the track bed and restore safe operations. Services resumed shortly after repairs were completed, with normal operations restored by 7:35 am.
The suspension affected 12 up and down services on the Trans-Harbour line. Hundreds of passengers were forced to disembark and wait at stations, causing significant inconvenience to daily commuters and office-goers travelling between Thane and Navi Mumbai. The incident also triggered cascading delays across the wider suburban rail network.
Other parts of the rail network faced similar weather-related disruptions. Waterlogging was reported on tracks at Matunga station on the Central Railway main line, resulting in delays of 10 to 15 minutes. Waterlogging was also reported near Dadar and Matunga Road stations on the Western Railway network, though authorities cleared the water at Matunga Road shortly after.
Additionally, videos of waterlogging on Platform 1 of Bhandup station after overnight rainfall surfaced on social media, prompting criticism from commuters. During the morning peak hours, Central Railway services were delayed by up to 20 minutes, while Western Railway services ran 10 minutes behind schedule.
Beyond the railways, road transport was also hit. Nearly 200 buses operated by the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) suffered breakdowns by Wednesday evening due to the adverse weather conditions.
