Monsoon Rains Cause Severe Flooding and Over 300 Tree Collapses Across Thane District

Recent monsoon showers have paralyzed daily life across the Thane district, including Thane, Mumbra, Kalyan, Dombivli, and Ambernath, leaving commuters stranded and submerging vehicles. The severe waterlogging and flooding have exposed critical urban planning and infrastructure failures, resulting in millions in business losses and the collapse of over 300 trees across the region.
During the recent spell of rain, major intersections across these localities transformed into fast-flowing rivers. Commuters were left stranded for hours, and businesses faced massive financial damages as water entered commercial properties. Local residents and business owners reported immediate flooding of residential and commercial premises.
Local experts have pointed to a systemic failure in urban planning and aggressive "concretization" as the primary causes of the disaster. Rather than scraping away old roads to maintain the topography of the area, authorities simply layered massive concrete slabs over existing structures. This flawed approach has raised road heights significantly, turning adjacent houses and shops into artificial low-lying basins.
In addition to the raised roads, natural water bodies, wetlands, and open plains have been systematically buried under high-rises and paver blocks. By sealing the earth in concrete, the crucial connection between rainwater and the groundwater table has been severed.
The district's existing drainage networks, built decades ago, are severely choked and lack the capacity to handle heavy runoffs. According to critics, this critical drainage issue was completely ignored during recent road expansions.
Citizens and critics are now pointing fingers at a deep-rooted nexus between contractors and local politicians. They allege that lucrative mega-tenders for concrete roads are being rushed through without the necessary hydrological or technical surveys, prioritizing short-term financial gains over public safety.
