MRVC Advances Construction of EMU Carsheds at Bhivpuri and Vangaon

The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation Ltd (MRVC) has stepped up construction and pre-development work on two new EMU carsheds at Bhivpuri and Vangaon. The facilities are being developed under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP-IIIA) to bolster maintenance infrastructure for the city's expanding suburban railway network.
At Bhivpuri, the complete requirement of 45.24 hectares of land—comprising 42.28 hectares of private land and 2.96 hectares of government land—has been acquired. Work gathered pace following the award of a contract in August 2025 covering land development, bridge extensions, boundary walls, drainage, and road works.
Around 7.16 lakh cubic metres of earthwork has been finished at the Bhivpuri site. In addition, drone surveys, Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) surveys, and geotechnical investigations have been concluded, while construction of the retaining wall is currently underway. Approvals for the Engineering Scale Plan (ESP) and the General Arrangement Drawings (GADs) for bridges are being processed.
Meanwhile, the Vangaon carshed project requires roughly 43.68 hectares. Acquisition of the 3.64 hectares of private land has progressed, with compensation deposited for distribution to landowners. The remaining portion consists of forest land. The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change granted Stage-I in-principle forest clearance in February 2026, and Stage-II clearance is under process.
Both facilities are part of MRVC’s broader programme to enhance EMU maintenance capacity alongside upgrading existing facilities. The expansion aims to provide essential maintenance infrastructure as Mumbai's suburban rolling stock fleet gradually increases and modernises.
