MSEDCL Issues Monsoon Safety Advisory for Bhandup Circle and Mumbai Region

On July 6, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) issued an urgent public advisory warning residents across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, including Bhandup Circle, to exercise extreme caution around electrical infrastructure during heavy rains and strong winds to prevent accidents.
Sanjay Patil, the Chief Engineer of MSEDCL's Bhandup Circle, stated that the risk of electrical accidents rises significantly during the monsoon season. Heavy rains, waterlogging, and strong winds can cause severe damage to the power infrastructure, making safety precautions essential for all citizens.
As a precautionary measure to ensure public safety, MSEDCL announced that power supply to certain transformers in vulnerable areas may be temporarily suspended. The utility has urged local residents to cooperate during these essential safety outages.
According to MSEDCL, heavy rains can cause trees or branches to fall on power lines, leading to snapped overhead wires, tilted or collapsed electricity poles, and water accumulation around transformers and feeder pillars. Additionally, moisture can damage electrical equipment, significantly increasing the risk of electrocution.
To prevent accidents, the power utility advised residents to maintain a safe distance from broken or hanging power lines and warned them never to attempt to touch or remove them. Any such incidents should be reported immediately to the utility.
Residents were also cautioned to ensure electrical safety inside their homes. Because water conducts electricity, MSEDCL warned against using wet switchboards, plugs, and electrical appliances. Homeowners have been advised to periodically inspect their earthing systems, switch off appliances after use, and replace damaged or exposed wires immediately.
For rural areas, the utility issued specific warnings against tying livestock to electricity poles or stay wires, and advised against drying clothes near overhead power lines. Citizens were also urged to avoid unnecessary movement around transformers, feeder pillars, and distribution boxes in public spaces.
In the event of a power outage, consumers are requested to remain calm and wait before contacting the customer service centre. MSEDCL has made several 24x7 toll-free helplines available for reporting snapped lines, fallen poles, or other faults, including 1912, 19120, 1800-233-3435, and 1800-212-3435. Outage complaints can also be registered by giving a missed call to 022-50897100 from a registered mobile number.
