MSRDC Clears Rs 138.45 Crore Compensation for Kalyan-Shilphata Road Widening

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has approved Rs 138.45 crore in compensation for landowners affected by the Kalyan-Shilphata Road widening project, resolving a land dispute that had stalled the vital corridor connecting Thane, Navi Mumbai, and Kalyan-Dombivli for nearly 35 years.
Compensation letters were formally presented to the beneficiaries on Tuesday during a meeting attended by Kalyan MP Dr Shrikant Shinde and MSRDC Managing Director Anilkumar Gaikwad, who handed over the official documents to affected property owners.
The Kalyan-Shilphata Road is a major arterial route carrying heavy volumes of daily commuters, commercial vehicles, and industrial traffic across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The ongoing project involves widening the corridor to six lanes and concretising the surface, but execution by the MSRDC had faced repeated interruptions due to protests from local farmers and landowners demanding compensation before construction proceeded.
The resulting construction delays created severe bottlenecks, particularly around Katainaka, Palava Junction, and the Shilphata area. Motorists and daily office-goers travelling between Kalyan, Dombivli, Ambernath, Badlapur, Thane, and Navi Mumbai routinely faced long traffic snarls.
The resolution followed discussions led by Dr Shrikant Shinde and Kalyan Rural MLA Rajesh More, who pursued the issue with state authorities to clear the payout. Officials confirmed that the remaining compensation amounts will also be disbursed in the near future.
The handover meeting was attended by Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) Commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee, District Collector Srikrishna Panchal, former Maharashtra Navnirman Sena MLA Raju Patil, and KDMC Mayor Harshali Chaudhary, along with affected landowners.
With the compensation cleared, authorities expect the six-lane concretisation work to pick up speed. The completion of the road upgrade is also projected to facilitate the construction of Metro Lines 12 and 12A along the corridor.
