MSRTC Revenue Rises by ₹66 Crore in August After Rescheduling Routes
The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation reported a ₹66 crore increase in revenue in August compared with July after restructuring its bus schedules to match commuter demand across Maharashtra. The state-run undertaking saw its total monthly revenue cross ₹1,000 crore for the first time, driven by route realignments initiated under Transport Minister and MSRTC Chairman Pratap Sarnaik.
The revenue boost followed a series of review meetings where Sarnaik directed the corporation to deploy buses specifically where passenger footfall is concentrated, rather than continuing relatively unproductive long-distance services. The strategy aimed directly at curtailing the public transport body's ongoing operating losses.
According to corporation data, more than 85 per cent of MSRTC passengers travel distances of less than 100 km, making short-distance and local routes the primary contributor to overall earnings. Since August, depots across the state have tailored bus timings to accommodate the daily movement patterns of commuters, farmers, women, students, and senior citizens. Additional bus services were also deployed on routes connecting local fairs, weekly markets, and community gatherings.
The operational shift led to a historic milestone on August 31, when the corporation registered its highest-ever single-day ticket collection of ₹45 crore. On regular days, MSRTC records an average daily revenue ranging between ₹34 crore and ₹35 crore.
Addressing the outcome, Sarnaik stated that demand-based scheduling demonstrated how the transport body could improve its financial standing while preserving its public service mandate. He described MSRTC as the lifeline of the common people and noted that deploying more buses where passengers are readily available was the most effective formula for strengthening revenues.
Looking ahead, Sarnaik expressed confidence that MSRTC could completely recover its operating losses over the next two to three months if current revenue trends hold. The transport undertaking now faces the challenge of sustaining these financial gains while ensuring that service adjustments do not compromise basic transit access for residents in rural and semi-urban localities.
