Mumbai Airport to Start Demolishing Part of Terminal 1 from Jan 15, 2027

Mumbai International Airport Ltd will begin demolishing a section of Terminal 1 at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport on January 15, 2027, and has started redistributing flight traffic to Terminal 2 and the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport.

The Adani Group-operated airport will raze the north section of Terminal 1-B as part of phase one of its redevelopment plan, aimed at minimising the impact on airline operations and passenger convenience. Details of the plan were outlined by MIAL chief airport officer Vishnu Mohan Jha in an August 13 letter to civil aviation secretary Samir Kumar Sinha.

Under the redistribution schedule, at least one-third of all international air traffic movements will be shifted to the Navi Mumbai International Airport starting October 1. Subsequently, at least one-third of all air traffic movements at Terminal 1 will be relocated to Terminal 2 beginning October 25. The operator plans to provide transition assistance to airlines for approximately three and a half months before demolition commences.

Operational realignment has already begun at the airport. Domestic carrier Akasa Air relocated its domestic operations from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2 on August 1.

Terminal 1 is nearly 80 years old, and portions of the structure have already been demolished in previous phases. Currently, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport handles more than 950 flight movements daily with an overall capacity exceeding 50 million passengers annually. Terminal 1 has an annual capacity of approximately 15 million passengers, while Terminal 2 is equipped to handle around 40 million passengers.
