Mumbai Collector Suspends Liquor Licence of Mahalaxmi Restobar The Ghetto

The office of the collector (state excise) of Mumbai city has suspended the liquor licence of The Ghetto Restaurant and Bar, which is located in the Mahalaxmi locality of Mumbai, for a period of 15 days. This suspension order was formally issued by Mumbai City Collector Anchal Goyal. The official action comes in the wake of a surprise inspection that revealed multiple violations on the premises.
During the initial surprise inspection, excise officials discovered significant discrepancies in the restaurant and bar's liquor stock. The inspection also revealed that unauthorised structural alterations had been made to the licensed premises. Furthermore, officials observed disturbances caused by crowds gathering outside the Mahalaxmi venue, and found that customers inside were consuming alcohol without holding valid individual permits.
Following this initial raid, the department received a series of complaints against the establishment. In response, various excise teams carried out subsequent inspections at the Mahalaxmi venue during the months of May and June to monitor the situation and document ongoing issues.
The excise department has highlighted the serious nature of the physical modifications made to the venue. According to the department, changing the layout of any licensed premises without obtaining prior official permission is a critical hazard. Officials warned that such unauthorised alterations directly risk public safety and could result in a potential loss of life in the event of a fire or any other disaster.
As a result of these findings, the 15-day liquor licence suspension was enacted to address the safety hazards and regulatory non-compliance at the Mahalaxmi establishment.
