Mumbai CSMT Dome Leaks After Heavy Rain, Foyer Barricaded Amid Restoration

The iconic central dome of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai developed major leaks on July 10, 2026, following days of heavy monsoon rain. The water leakage prompted Central Railway authorities to barricade the foyer directly beneath the historic dome to ensure safety and manage the water inflow.
The leaks in the dome became prominent after the city experienced four consecutive days of relentless rain. The central dome, which stands as a prominent feature of the Mumbai landmark, began dripping water directly into the foyer area below, necessitating immediate action from the station management.
To prevent commuters from walking through the wet area, the affected portion of the foyer was cordoned off. Rags and floor cloths were laid down across the floor to soak up the water leaking from the high ceiling of the heritage structure.
Central Railway confirmed that the dome was already part of an active, scientific restoration project prior to the leaks. This conservation effort is designed to address structural vulnerabilities in the UNESCO World Heritage building.
Parts of the CSMT exterior have been covered with protective sheeting to shield the historic stonework from the elements while the restoration work is carried out. The railway authorities are continuing their scientific conservation program to protect the integrity of the iconic landmark.
The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus is recognized globally as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, making the preservation of its central dome a key focus for railway authorities. The restoration work continues at the site to address the vulnerabilities exposed by the heavy seasonal rains. Central Railway is overseeing the scientific restoration programme to ensure the long-term protection of the landmark.
The ongoing conservation work on the UNESCO-listed building is aimed at preserving its historic architecture, which has been temporarily impacted by the heavy seasonal downpours.
