Mumbai Festival Airfares Surge for August Long Weekends Despite Navi Mumbai Relief

Airfares from Mumbai have surged sharply for the upcoming August long weekends around Raksha Bandhan and Janmashtami, though the addition of operations at Navi Mumbai airport has provided some relief on high-frequency routes.
With Raksha Bandhan and Janmashtami falling on consecutive Fridays, demand for domestic air travel has climbed substantially. However, ticket pricing varies significantly depending on the route and airport. While destinations with fewer flight frequencies, including pilgrimage centres, are seeing steep fare spikes, the new capacity at Navi Mumbai has helped moderate fares on popular sectors such as Goa and Kerala.
Return airfares to Ayodhya for travel midweek start at Rs 15,000, but climb to at least Rs 24,000 for the Raksha Bandhan weekend on flights connecting via Delhi. Fares to Agra have also climbed sharply ahead of Janmashtami. To most destinations, flights operating out of Navi Mumbai airport are cheaper by a few thousand rupees compared to departures from Mumbai airport. However, the high cost of road transit to Navi Mumbai remains a factor for passengers, particularly solo travellers. Booking platforms have also begun displaying Navi Mumbai (NMI) options alongside Mumbai (BOM) searches, requiring travellers to check departure points carefully.
For Onam travel, additional flights from Navi Mumbai have helped prevent sharp fare spikes on Kerala routes compared to previous years. Cleartrip reported that Bengaluru remains the largest source market for travel to Kerala across bus and air routes, followed by Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Hyderabad, with Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram recording the highest volume of flight bookings.
Travel booking patterns also showed strong festive and holiday demand across several cities. For Raksha Bandhan, Lucknow registered a 96% year-on-year rise in air bookings, followed by Bhopal at 86%, Indore at 82%, Raipur at 75%, and Patna at 58%. Leisure demand rose alongside hometown visits, with hotel bookings in Delhi and Udaipur rising 83% year-on-year, while Hyderabad and Bengaluru recorded triple-digit growth.
Data from travel portal Agoda showed Goa, Mumbai, and Puri as the top three searched domestic destinations for the Raksha Bandhan weekend, followed by spots including Ooty, Munnar, Lonavala, and Varanasi. For the Janmashtami weekend, Goa, Udaipur, and Mumbai led domestic searches.
