Mumbai House Help Gifts Saree and Clothes to Employer During Puja

A domestic worker in Mumbai surprised her employer by gifting her a saree and clothes for her son during a puja held at their residence, demonstrating a deep bond formed over four years of working together.

Kirti Choudhary, a Mumbai-based business owner who runs UGNA Makhana, shared the experience after her house help, Meera, presented her with a saree alongside a shirt and a pair of jeans for her young son. Despite navigating ongoing personal financial hardships as the primary earner for her household, Meera saved funds independently to purchase the gifts for the occasion.

Choudhary stated that she chose to accept the presents to honour the affection behind the gesture. She noted that Meera expressed immense joy upon seeing Choudhary's son wear the new clothes.

Meera arrived in Mumbai from her village four years ago in search of employment opportunities, marking her first time living outside her native place. Her employment with Choudhary was her first job in the city. When she began, Meera spoke primarily Marathi and lacked experience with standard household tasks such as cooking, preparing rotis, and mopping. Over the past four years, she developed those domestic skills and gained confidence in her daily routine.

Meera currently works full-time with Choudhary while occasionally taking on additional small jobs to meet family expenses. She supports three studying children—two sons and a daughter—alongside an ailing mother-in-law with an eye condition, while her husband is unable to work. Choudhary stated that she is arranging for Meera's mother-in-law to undergo an eye operation in the coming days.

Choudhary, who also conducts dance classes in her residential society, teaches underprivileged students, and engages in weekend welfare initiatives, noted that their relationship has evolved beyond typical employment. She stated that she is planning an upcoming trip with Meera to give her time away from daily responsibilities.
