Mumbai Lake Levels Reach 88.70 Per Cent Capacity as Modak Sagar and Vihar Overflow
Mumbai's water stock across its seven key supplying reservoirs stood at 88.70 per cent on Sunday, according to the latest data released by the Hydraulic Engineer's Department. Even as total reservoir levels remain high, isolated areas in the city continued to struggle with water scarcity.
The official figures show that the lakes currently contain 12,83,826 million litres (ML) of useful live storage against a maximum total live storage capacity of 14,47,363 ML. Although overall storage remains high, the current stock is lower than levels recorded during the same period in the past two years. During the corresponding period in 2025, the water stock was recorded at 89.11 per cent, while in 2024 it stood at 90.87 per cent.
Reservoir levels vary across the individual lakes supplying the metropolis. Modak Sagar and Vihar lakes have both reached 100 per cent of their useful live storage capacity. Tulsi lake reported a stock level of nearly 99.87 per cent, while Tansa reported 98.77 per cent. Among the remaining reservoirs, Middle Vaitarna held 90.55 per cent of its capacity, Bhatsa stood at 86.28 per cent, and Upper Vaitarna held 80.14 per cent.
In terms of recent shifts over the latest 24-hour reporting period, the water level in Middle Vaitarna rose by 0.28 metres. Upper Vaitarna recorded no change in its stock level over the same period.
Rainfall activity at the Bhandup Complex recorded 5 mm of precipitation over the latest 24 hours. This brought the complex's cumulative seasonal rainfall total to 2,432 mm.
The Hydraulic Engineer's Department report also outlined the timeline of lake overflows and gate operations from earlier in the season. Vihar lake and Tulsi lake were the first to begin overflowing on July 7. Tansa lake started overflowing on July 22, followed by Modak Sagar on July 23. Regarding dam operations, the release of water from Upper Vaitarna was stopped on July 6, and the Middle Vaitarna WSCPO gate was closed on July 6.
