Mumbai Lake Levels Reach 94.69% Capacity With Over 13.7 Lakh Million Litres

Mumbai’s seven key water supply reservoirs held a combined 13,70,502 million litres of useful water as of 6 am on Saturday, bringing the total stock to 94.69% of live storage capacity, according to data from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation Hydraulic Engineer’s Department.

The healthy storage levels follow steady rainfall across catchment areas during the ongoing monsoon. The seven reservoirs that supply water to the city include Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna, Modak Sagar, Tansa, and Bhatsa located outside city limits, as well as Vihar and Tulsi located within Mumbai.

Vihar Lake reached 100% of its live storage capacity, holding 27,698 million litres of useful water. Modak Sagar stood at 99.99% with 1,28,910 million litres, while Tulsi reached 99.66% with 8,019 million litres. Tansa was recorded at 99.02% capacity, holding 1,43,652 million litres.

Among the remaining reservoirs, Bhatsa stood at 94.76% and Middle Vaitarna at 94.54%. Upper Vaitarna recorded 88.01% live storage capacity, holding 1,99,818 million litres of useful water.

The current combined stock of 94.69% matches the level recorded during the corresponding period in 2024, and is marginally lower than the 94.95% recorded in 2025.

Rainfall over the 24-hour period preceding the report contributed further to the reserves. Modak Sagar received 28 mm of rain, while Upper Vaitarna and Middle Vaitarna recorded 24 mm each. Tansa received 11 mm, Tulsi 10 mm, and both Bhatsa and Vihar recorded 4 mm. Cumulative rainfall figures show Upper Vaitarna at 3,535 mm, Tulsi at 3,406 mm, and Modak Sagar at 2,970 mm.

Several reservoirs have been overflowing since July. Vihar began overflowing on July 7 at 9 pm, followed by Tulsi at 11.43 pm the same night. Tansa Dam began overflowing on July 22 at 8.51 am, and Modak Sagar started overflowing on July 23 at 2.07 am. The Middle Vaitarna WSPCO gate was closed on July 6 at 2 pm, while water releases from Upper Vaitarna were halted at 10 am that day.

According to municipal records, the Upper Vaitarna project, fully commissioned in 1972 as a multipurpose hydroelectric and water supply scheme, remains a major contributor to the city's water availability by channeling water into the Vaitarna supply network.
