Mumbai Lake Water Stock Rises To 88.88 Per Cent Amid Ongoing Rain
Water stock across the seven lakes supplying drinking water to Mumbai reached 88.88 per cent of total live storage capacity on Monday, according to the latest figures released by the Hydraulic Engineer’s Department. Continued rainfall across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region during the ongoing monsoon season contributed to the slight increase in overall water levels.
The combined useful water content across all seven reservoirs stood at approximately 12,86,403 million litres on Monday. This figure compares to the total live storage capacity of 14,47,363 million litres across the municipal lake network. The storage level reflects a 0.18 percentage point increase from the previous day, when total stock was recorded at 88.70 per cent.
Individual lake levels detailed in the official report show that Vihar and Tulsi lakes remained completely full, recording 100 per cent of their respective live storage capacities. Both Vihar and Tulsi lakes had previously started overflowing on July 7. Modak Sagar remained nearly full at 99.99 per cent of its live storage capacity, having begun overflowing on July 23. Tansa Dam recorded 99.02 per cent of its live storage capacity after starting to overflow on July 22.
Among the other primary reservoirs supplying the city, Middle Vaitarna recorded 91.18 per cent of its live storage capacity. Bhatsa recorded 86.43 per cent of its capacity, while Upper Vaitarna stood at 80.14 per cent of its live storage.
The latest figures indicate that the city's water reservoirs remain in a comfortable position following substantial monsoon rainfall. Civic officials from the Hydraulic Engineer’s Department are continuing to monitor the water stock closely as additional rain is anticipated in the coming weeks.
On Monday morning, Mumbai experienced light drizzle, cloudy skies, and gusty winds. The India Meteorological Department forecasted moderate rain and thundershowers during the day, with wind speeds potentially reaching 50 to 60 kmph during intense spells and maximum temperatures expected to stay around 32°C. No official rain alert was issued for the city for the week.
