Mumbai Man Dies in Monsoon Tragedy En Route to Inaugurating His New Kurla Shop

On Sunday morning, a Mumbai resident died in a monsoon-related tragedy while traveling from his home in Bharat Nagar, Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) to inaugurate his family's new shop in Naupada, Kurla. The victim, Yunus Kundawala, was heading to the new business premises around 10 am when the incident occurred, cutting short his lifelong dream of owning a business.
Kundawala, who was the sole breadwinner of his family, is survived by his wife Zehra and his two sons, 26-year-old Burhan and 24-year-old Mustafa. The family had lived in a modest one-bedroom apartment in Bharat Nagar, where Kundawala supported them by earning between Rs 10,000 and Rs 12,000 a month working at various hardware and scrap shops across Mumbai.
His cousin, Akbar Fida Hussain Rangwalla, 66, recalled that Kundawala had spent years helping others build their businesses while harboring a dream of his own. Rangwalla stated that Kundawala's sole ambition was to have a shop where he could sit at his own desk and run his own business.
To realize this vision, his sons Burhan and Mustafa joined him after completing their graduation two years ago. They worked alongside their father to learn the intricacies of the hardware and scrap trade. After saving enough money, the family leased a shop in Kurla's Naupada on July 1. The area is a prominent hub for small traders dealing in metal scrap and hardware.
Sunday was meant to be the first day of operations for the new venture, starting with a traditional inauguration ceremony before opening the shutters. Despite the heavy rain and gusty winds, Kundawala had stepped out of his house with excitement.
According to his close friend and former co-worker, Shoaib Khan, Kundawala had already prepared a list of customers and coordinated with suppliers to ensure a smooth start. However, the sudden tragedy prevented him from opening the shop, leaving his family devastated and turning a day of planned celebration into a time of grief.
