Mumbai Mandals Welcome Ganesha Idols in First Maha-Aagman Sohala at Lalbaug-Parel
Mumbai witnessed its first Maha-Aagman Sohala of the year on Saturday, August 15, as several popular Ganeshotsav mandals across the city welcomed their idols ahead of Ganesh Chaturthi. Lalbaug-Parel and surrounding neighbourhoods turned into a sea of people as large crowds of devotees gathered to catch early glimpses of the arriving idols.
The initial arrival celebrations offered devotees a preview of the diverse themes, towering structures, and artistic forms planned for this year's festival. Processions carried idols through key streets, drawing significant attention from onlookers throughout the day.
Among the tallest idols featured during the celebrations was Khetwadicha Vighnaharta, which made a dramatic entry into the Lalbaug-Parel area. Owing to the sheer height of the idol, organizers transported it from the opposite side of the Lalbaug-Parel road. The presentation included a grand lion chariot setup accompanied by a Goddess figure positioned in the backdrop.
Several other mandals also showcased unique artistic concepts during the processions. Slater Road Cha Raja arrived in a striking pose balancing alongside Riddhi and Siddhi, noted for its intricate detailing and composition. Meanwhile, Marolcha Vighnaharta appeared balancing on one leg, backed by a mythological depiction of Lord Vishnu's Varaha avatar.
Patriotic and traditional themes were also on display. Shivdi Cha Raja was presented on a majestic Dwarka-themed throne, topped with a prominently displayed Tricolour to mark the August 15 arrival date. Mumbaicha Lambodar introduced a distinctive Trishund avatar featuring three trunks, offering a unique interpretation for visiting devotees.
In addition, Dharavicha Sukhakarta drew attention with a towering, standing white-coloured idol characterized by a distinct elephant-like head design. The various processions brought thousands of devotees onto the streets, signaling the start of arrival festivities across Mumbai ahead of Ganeshotsav.
