Mumbai Marks 84th Anniversary of Quit India Movement at August Kranti Maidan

Leaders across party lines, school children, and citizens gathered at the martyrs’ memorial at August Kranti Maidan in south Mumbai on Sunday, August 9, 2026, to pay homage to freedom fighters on the 84th anniversary of the Quit India Movement.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis paid tribute to the martyrs, stating that the legacy of patriotism shown by freedom fighters continues to inspire generations. In a post on X, CM Fadnavis said that the courage and determination of countless freedom fighters during the movement strengthened India's march towards independence. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also noted that those who participated in the Quit India movement remain an inspiration for every Indian.

Nationalist Congress Party (SP) chief Sharad Pawar recalled that the Quit India Movement was launched under Mahatma Gandhi's leadership in Mumbai on August 9, 1942, with the historic call of "Do or Die." In a message on X, the former Union minister paid tribute to both known and unknown freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives, noting that millions of citizens joined the movement to intensify the struggle against British rule.

Maharashtra Congress president Harshwardhan Sapkal also paid tribute to freedom fighters in a post on X, stating that the movement intensified the final phase of India's freedom struggle and served as a powerful expression of the people's resolve to achieve independence.

Throughout the day, school children and people from all walks of life visited the memorial at August Kranti Maidan to offer tributes at the historic site where the movement was originally launched.
