Mumbai Mayor Orders Probe After Chembur Tree Collapse Kills Student Vihan Srivastava

On Tuesday, June 30, 2026, an 11-year-old student was killed and four other students were injured after a large tree collapsed on a school bus in the Chembur locality of Mumbai, Maharashtra. Following the fatal incident, Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde visited the site of the tragedy and ordered a detailed probe to investigate the matter.
The deceased child has been identified by authorities as 11-year-old Vihan Srivastava. He was a student at Universal High School. The school bus was carrying the children through the Chembur area when the massive tree suddenly fell directly onto the vehicle.
Following the accident on Tuesday, Mayor Ritu Tawde arrived at the Chembur site to personally inspect the scene of the tragedy. After assessing the exact spot where the tree had collapsed onto the school bus, the Mayor proceeded to Zen Hospital. At the hospital, she met with the four injured students who were receiving medical care, and she also met with the bereaved family of Vihan Srivastava to offer support.
During her visit to the area, Mayor Tawde spoke about the scale of the incident and the size of the tree that fell on the active school vehicle.
"I visited the spot. It was a very large tree. The tree fell on the bus while it was passing through the area. I have spoken to the concerned," Mayor Tawde stated.
In response to the tragic death and the injuries, Mayor Tawde has officially ordered a detailed inquiry into the incident. The probe will investigate the circumstances surrounding the tree collapse in Chembur. Local municipal authorities and concerned officials have been contacted by the Mayor as part of the investigation.
