Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde Urges Residents to Stay Indoors Amid IMD Red Alert

Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde has appealed to residents across Mumbai to remain indoors and take safety precautions as the city experiences heavy rainfall and strong winds. The warning follows a Red Alert issued for the city by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

In a video message shared on Instagram, Tawde urged citizens to prioritize their safety and avoid unnecessary travel. The Mayor highlighted that the combination of intense downpours and extremely strong winds has already led to an increase in incidents of trees and branches collapsing across various parts of the city.

"As the First Citizen of Mumbai, I humbly appeal to all Mumbaikars," Tawde said in her message. "Mumbai is currently witnessing heavy rainfall, and a Red Alert has been issued. Strong winds have also led to incidents of trees and branches collapsing. In these circumstances, your safety and that of your family are our highest priority."

Tawde strongly advised residents to avoid stepping out of their homes unless there is an urgent or emergency matter. She noted that staying indoors remains the safest option while the severe weather conditions persist.

For those who must commute, the Mayor warned of potential waterlogging and traffic congestion, which could significantly increase travel times. She also cautioned pedestrians against standing under trees, noting that strong winds pose a severe risk of heavy branches breaking off.

Vehicle owners were similarly advised to take precautions. Tawde instructed residents not to park their vehicles under large trees, near dilapidated walls, or close to electric poles, urging them to find safe and open spaces instead.

To ensure public safety and order, the Mayor appealed to citizens not to believe or spread rumours, advising them to trust only official sources for weather and safety updates.

In the event of an emergency, Tawde directed residents to immediately contact the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Disaster Management Control Room by dialing the helpline number 1916 for assistance.
