Mumbai Parsi Community Marks Pateti Ahead of Navroz Celebrations on August 15

The Parsi community in Mumbai will usher in the Parsi New Year, or Jamshedi Navroz, on August 15 with prayers, reflection and family gatherings across the city. Observed on the first day of the Zoroastrian calendar year, the festival holds deep religious and cultural significance for Parsis and Iranian Zoroastrians.
The day preceding Navroz, known as Pateti, was observed on Friday as a dedicated time of repentance and introspection. Ahead of the new year, devotees offered prayers, sought forgiveness for past mistakes and reflected on their conduct before stepping into the new calendar year with renewed hope and a commitment to righteousness.
While the terms Pateti and Parsi New Year are frequently used interchangeably, community members and scholars highlight their distinct religious significance. Noshir Dadrawala, a corporate social responsibility and non-profit law consultant who writes on Zoroastrian religious customs, explained that Pateti focuses strictly on self-reflection rather than celebration.
Dadrawala noted that the day is dedicated to examining past deeds, forgiving oneself and preparing spiritually for the year ahead. He explained that Pateti is not a joyous occasion and involves special prayers known as 'Patet Pashemani', which serve as prayers of repentance where individuals express remorse for past sins. In the modern context, he added, the observance remains centered on self-reflection.
Following Pateti, Navroz brings joyous observances as Zoroastrians visit agiaries and Atash Behrams across Mumbai to offer prayers and seek blessings. Families clean and decorate their homes, dress in festive attire and prepare traditional delicacies to mark the occasion.
Community organisations and Parsi institutions across Mumbai are also organising special prayers and social gatherings. The festival remains rooted in the core Zoroastrian principles of Humata, Hukhta and Hvarshta, representing good thoughts, good words and good deeds.
