Mumbai Police Book Principals of 35 Unrecognized Schools in Govandi

The Mumbai police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the principals, secretaries, and directors of 35 primary schools operating without official recognition in Govandi. The legal action was initiated following a formal complaint filed by an education official from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) regarding the unauthorized institutions.

According to the BMC education department, an investigation conducted for the academic year 2025-26 revealed that 164 primary schools were operating across Mumbai without the required government authorization. Out of these 164 unauthorized institutions, 35 schools were found to be operating specifically within the jurisdiction of the Shivaji Nagar police station in Govandi.

Prior to the registration of the FIR, the municipal authorities had issued formal notices to the management of these institutions. The notices were sent directly to the schools, as well as their respective principals and secretaries. The directives ordered the immediate closure of the unauthorized primary schools and demanded that the administrators provide a written explanation for their operations within seven days.

Several specific schools were named by the authorities in connection with the unauthorized operations. These include the Blue Angels English School in Baiganwadi, the Citizen English Primary School, the Shri Shivajirao Salve Primary School in Govandi, and the Sana Urdu Primary School in Shivajinagar.

The FIR has been registered at the Shivaji Nagar police station against the school officials for continuing to run the primary classes without securing the necessary legal recognition from the education department. The police and educational authorities are continuing their actions against the management of the 35 unrecognized schools as part of the wider crackdown on unauthorized educational institutions in Mumbai.
