Mumbai Public Hospitals Face Blood Shortages Forcing Families to Buy Private

Families of patients admitted to public and BMC-run hospitals in Mumbai are facing severe hardships and financial strain due to a critical shortage of blood stocks. The deficit, which has intensified during the rainy season following a severe summer heat wave, has forced relatives to scramble for voluntary donors or purchase blood from private blood banks. Normally, patients admitted to these civic hospitals are eligible to receive blood for free.

The shortage has left many families in distress as they struggle to secure blood for major medical procedures. In one instance, a 24-year-old youth spent four days searching for six blood bags required for his uncle's upcoming cardiac bypass surgery at a public hospital. While the youth successfully donated one unit of blood, his friends who volunteered to donate were turned down because they had recently received tattoos. Consequently, he had to purchase three bags from a private blood bank and was still searching for the remaining two bags.

In another public hospital, a relative named Ramesh Shinde (name changed) was instructed to arrange four bags of blood for his father's gastrointestinal surgery. Shinde made dozens of phone calls to various public blood banks across Mumbai, but none were able to spare a single unit. He was ultimately forced to buy all four bags from a private blood bank to deposit at the public hospital.

According to blood bank officials and medical staff, the demand for blood typically shoots up during the rains. However, the primary cause of the current shortage is the recently ended scorching summer. A doctor from a BMC-run hospital stated that many scheduled blood donation drives had to be postponed or rescheduled due to the severe heat wave. As a result, many public blood banks across the city have been left without adequate stock to meet patient needs.
