Mumbai Schools and Offices to Remain Open on July 8 as Weather Alert Downgraded

Schools, colleges, and offices in Mumbai, Maharashtra, are expected to operate as usual on Wednesday, July 8, after authorities declined to declare an official holiday following a downgrade in the city's weather alert. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) scaled back its warning for the city from an Orange to a Yellow alert as rainfall intensity eased.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Maharashtra state government have not issued any official closure orders. Unless fresh instructions are released by these authorised agencies, all educational institutions and workplaces across Mumbai will maintain normal operations.
Officials are continuing to monitor the evolving weather situation. Any decision to suspend school or office operations will depend on overnight rainfall levels and subsequent forecasts from the IMD. Authorities have advised students, parents, and employees to rely strictly on official communications from their respective institutions and employers before traveling.
While the downgrading to a Yellow alert indicates a lower intensity of rain compared to previous days, the IMD warned that heavy rainfall at isolated locations and strong winds are still possible. Civic authorities have cautioned residents that waterlogging and flooding may still occur in vulnerable, low-lying areas of the city.
Meanwhile, the BMC has maintained its emergency preparedness measures despite the lowered alert level. Disaster response teams remain on standby around the clock. The civic body has positioned dewatering pumps, suction equipment, and emergency personnel in flood-prone areas to address potential incidents such as tree falls, electrical faults, and structural issues.
The BMC has also advised private companies to consider allowing their employees to work from home if weather conditions deteriorate during the day.
In contrast to Mumbai's downgraded status, other districts in Maharashtra, including Pune and Satara, remain under an Orange Alert for July 8, with heavy to very heavy rainfall predicted in those regions.
Civic officials have urged Mumbai residents to ignore unverified social media messages regarding closures and to monitor updates from the BMC, the Maharashtra School Education Department, and verified government accounts.
