Mumbai Student Shreya Mundhada Wins Silver As India Ranks 7th At Shanghai Math Olympiad
Mumbai student Shreya Shantanu Mundhada has won a silver medal at the 67th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) held in Shanghai, China, as part of an Indian contingent deputy-led by Mainak Ghosh of the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education in Mumbai.
The Indian student contingent achieved a major milestone at the global competition, securing an unofficial global rank of seventh overall among the 117 competing nations. This performance highlights the continued strength of the country's young mathematicians on the international stage.
In total, the Indian contingent won two gold and four silver medals at the event. This outstanding performance marks the fourth consecutive year that India has finished among the top 10 countries at this prestigious international competition.
The Indian students competed against a total of 666 participants from 117 countries. This high number of competitors made this particular edition the largest-ever in the history of the International Mathematical Olympiad.
Among the individual medalists, Aarav Gupta from Delhi and Abel George Mathew from Karnataka secured the two gold medals for the country.
The four silver medals were bagged by Shreya Shantanu Mundhada of Mumbai, Bairav Murugan from Karnataka, Kanav Talwar from Delhi, and Sanjana Philo Chacko from Kerala.
The delegation was supported by a dedicated team of academic leaders and observers. Alongside deputy leader Mainak Ghosh of the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, the student team was accompanied by observers Siddharth Choppara from the Chennai Mathematical Institute and Adhitya Mangudy from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA.
Significantly, three members of the mentoring team who trained the participants are themselves former IMO medal winners. These individuals returned to the program to guide and mentor the next generation of mathematical talent representing India on the global stage.
