Mumbai University Fines 51 Colleges Up To Rs 26.3 Lakh For Exam And Admission Lapses
The University of Mumbai has penalized 51 of its affiliated colleges for a range of examination- and admission-related irregularities during the 2025-26 academic year. The penalized institutions face fines ranging from Rs 10,000 to Rs 26.3 lakh for administrative lapses that left students facing academic disruptions.
According to official university records, the 51 colleges were penalized for several different lapses. These infractions included making errors in exam results, delaying the submission of answer sheets, and distributing incorrect question papers to students. Additionally, some colleges granted admissions without prior approval and failed to communicate corrections issued for question papers.
The University of Mumbai has more than 800 affiliated colleges in total. Commenting on the situation, a senior faculty member stated that violations of examination and admission rules continue to place students at the receiving end of administrative lapses.
The examination-related failures directly impacted candidates during their university exams. In some cases, students were given the wrong question papers. In other instances, the university issued official corrections to erroneous questions, but certain colleges allegedly failed to communicate these critical changes to the candidates inside the examination halls. Consequently, students ended up attempting questions that had already been withdrawn or modified by the university.
In addition to the exam errors, serious irregularities were also detected in the admission processes of the penalized colleges. Some institutions failed to adhere to the university’s official admission deadlines. Other colleges went ahead and admitted students without completing the required procedures or obtaining the necessary prior permission from the university.
The fines, which scale up to Rs 26.3 lakh depending on the severity of the lapse, have been levied to penalize these administrative and examination errors.
