Mumbai University, INCOIS Partner to Build Coastal Disaster Research Centre

The University of Mumbai and the Hyderabad-based Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Friday to establish a joint research centre. The initiative is designed to strengthen early warning systems and bolster disaster preparedness across Maharashtra's 720-kilometre coastline.
The new facility will focus on developing scientific solutions to improve readiness for natural hazards that threaten the state's coastal belt. Key areas of focus include monitoring and preparing for events such as tsunamis, storm surges, high waves, and fluctuations in sea levels.
According to University of Mumbai Vice-Chancellor Ravindra Kulkarni, the institutional collaboration will directly assist coastal communities in Mumbai, Palghar, Ratnagiri, and Vengurla. The partnership seeks to boost the ability of local populations to respond effectively to climate change and environmental threats.
Beyond risk reduction, the joint centre aims to enhance response mechanisms and formulate targeted measures to tackle emerging environmental challenges. Both institutions plan to promote ocean-based technologies and enhance coastal resilience through shared technical expertise.
The collaboration will also work toward developing advanced ocean science services while conducting joint research and development projects. These joint initiatives are intended to support marine industries and promote the sustainable use of ocean resources across Maharashtra's coastal region.
