Mumbai Vidhan Bhavan introduces face recognition entry with one day exemption

On Monday, June 22, 2026, Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar announced that entry to the Maharashtra Vidhan Bhavan complex in Mumbai will be regulated through a newly introduced face-recognition system starting from Tuesday.
The announcement was made during the opening day of the monsoon session of the state legislature. Speaker Narwekar informed the members of the House that the final procedures for implementing the new access-control mechanism had been completed and finalised.
To ensure a smooth transition to the high-tech security system, the Speaker granted a one-day exemption for certain individuals. This temporary exemption applies to journalists, government officials, and legislature employees who have not yet finished their biometric registration process for the face-recognition system.
Regarding the registration status of the lawmakers, Speaker Narwekar stated that the process is currently nearing completion. He confirmed that the vast majority of the legislators have already successfully enrolled their details into the new face-recognition database.
The introduction of the face-recognition system marks a significant upgrade to the entry and security regulations at the Maharashtra Vidhan Bhavan. The system is designed to manage and monitor access to the legislative complex more effectively.
With the procedures finalized, the legislature complex will transition to this digital access-control format, requiring all regular attendees, including legislators, officials, and media personnel, to complete their enrollment in the system.
