Mumbai Warned of Extremely Heavy Rain High Tides and Leptospirosis

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) have issued urgent warnings for Mumbai and its suburbs on July 6 and July 7, 2026, cautioning residents against extremely heavy rainfall, high tides, and a rising risk of leptospirosis.

According to the IMD forecast for July 6, 2026, the city and its suburbs will experience continuous spells of rain, with very heavy rainfall at several places and extremely heavy rain at isolated locations. Occasional gusty winds reaching speeds of 60 to 70 kmph are also expected, which increases the likelihood of tree falls, waterlogging, and disruptions to daily life.

In addition to the heavy downpour, weather officials warned of high tides scheduled for Tuesday, July 7, 2026. A high tide of 4.08 metres is expected at 3:56 pm, followed by another high tide of 3.44 metres at 4:38 am. Low tides are forecast at 9:59 am at 1.86 metres and at 10:13 pm at 1.52 metres.

Civic authorities have advised people living in coastal and low-lying areas of Mumbai to remain highly alert. Heavy rainfall coinciding with high tides can significantly slow down the drainage of rainwater, leading to an increased risk of severe flooding.

Alongside the weather alerts, the BMC Public Health Department issued an advisory warning of leptospirosis, a bacterial infection that spreads during the monsoon. The disease is transmitted through the urine of infected animals, including rats, cattle, and dogs. Humans can contract the infection when water or soil contaminated with this urine comes into contact with open cuts or wounds on the skin.

Health officials have urged residents not to ignore symptoms that develop after exposure to floodwater. Symptoms of leptospirosis include fever, redness of the eyes, jaundice, and body aches or flu-like illnesses.

The BMC has advised citizens experiencing these symptoms to immediately visit the nearest Municipal Corporation hospital, dispensary, or Hindu Hruday Samrat Balasaheb Thackeray Apna Dispensary for free medical examinations and preventive treatment.

To prevent infection, the civic body recommended that citizens avoid walking through stagnant water, wear rubber boots or waterproof footwear when stepping out, and clean and cover all wounds.
